Editorial deck: Use seven nights and three bases—Brașov, Sighișoara and Sibiu—with one fixed anchor on relocation days. Treat the Transfăgărășan as an optional live road product, never a guaranteed route.
A reliable Transylvania road trip is not a race through every castle on a map. Build it around three accommodation addresses, a rental contract that permits the route and a small number of official attraction products. Seven nights gives the plan room to absorb parking, queues, weather and road changes.
This version uses three nights in Brașov, one in Sighișoara and three in Sibiu. Bran Castle and Peleș Castle are alternative day anchors from Brașov. The Transfăgărășan is attempted from the Sibiu base only when official road and weather gates pass. Corvin Castle requires extra nights.

One fixed anchor on a relocation day is the ceiling. A stop is optional when road conditions, parking or check-in consume the buffer.
Confirm that self-drive fits before booking
A rental car is one structure, not a universal requirement. Compare it with rail or a dated guided product when no traveller is comfortable with unfamiliar roads, parking or a long mountain day.
For self-drive, obtain written answers from the rental company:
- whether every driver’s licence and issuing country are accepted;
- whether an International Driving Permit or translation is required;
- minimum age and driving-experience rules;
- deposit, payment card and excess;
- territorial and unpaved-road restrictions;
- tyre and seasonal-equipment terms;
- breakdown, accident and roadside process;
- who supplies the Romanian road-use vignette;
- return fuel/charge, time and location.
Do not rely on a general statement that US, UK, Canadian or EU licences are accepted. Immigration law, road law and the rental contract are separate gates. Confirm with the appropriate Romanian authority and the supplier before paying.
Road-use charge and live traffic
Romania applies a road-use charge on relevant roads. Use the official e-rovinieta portal and verify the rental vehicle’s registration, category and coverage with the supplier. Never buy against an unconfirmed plate or assume the rental price includes it.
The Romanian Police INFOTRAFIC portal publishes live restrictions and incidents on national roads and motorways. Check the selected route shortly before every drive. Live navigation helps with routing but does not override a closure, police direction or the rental contract.
Avoid fixed drive-time promises. Save the route and an alternate, then add parking, fuel, rest and attraction check-in separately.
Nights 1–3: Brașov base
Choose an exact accommodation address that can receive the car legally. A listing in “Old Town” does not guarantee vehicle access, private parking or luggage drop-off.
Confirm:
- parking address, height/size limits and reservation;
- pedestrian-zone or access-hour restrictions;
- luggage route from parking to reception;
- late-arrival process;
- cancellation deadline;
- departure route for each selected day product.
Night 1 has no paid attraction. Inspect and photograph the rental vehicle, save emergency contacts, test navigation and rest before the first regional drive.
Day 2: Bran Castle or local Brașov
Bran is a product only when the official Bran Castle site confirms the date, ticket, opening information and current access. Choose the castle for its documented history and collections, not because a Dracula slogan guarantees a particular experience.
Before purchase:
- Read the current ticket inclusions and optional products.
- Confirm the accepted entry date or slot.
- Check parking separately; admission does not include it unless stated.
- Review stairs, surfaces and access with the castle for individual needs.
- Keep a Brașov local fallback if the product or road fails.
Do not automatically add Râșnov Fortress. Restoration and visitor access have changed; it becomes an anchor only when the competent local authority publishes a current open product and route. An exterior viewpoint is not permission to enter a closed work site.
Day 3: Peleș Castle or local Brașov
Peleș is a separate day because its ticket window, arrival order and closure calendar require protection. The Peleș National Museum schedule publishes current operating days, planned conservation closures, ticket validity and entry rules. Its official ticket portal controls live inventory.
Choose the exact castle and product; Peleș and Pelișor are not one interchangeable admission. Save the date or window and note whether the ticket can be changed or refunded. Then test the Brașov-address-to-Sinaia route, current road status, parking and the final walk.
If the castle is closed, inventory is unsuitable or the return becomes fragile, use the Brașov fallback. Do not replace it with a rushed chain of two castles.
Night 4: relocate to Sighișoara
Check out after breakfast and drive directly unless one verified stop fits without risking check-in. Sighișoara’s historic centre is the day’s flexible anchor: park at the accommodation’s confirmed location and explore only within available daylight and walking capacity.
The city’s heritage does not require Dracula or “birthplace” marketing. Use accurate local or institutional interpretation for the citadel and its buildings. Do not promise fewer visitors after a particular hour.
Ask the property whether vehicles can reach the door, whether the citadel street is restricted and how bags cross cobbles or steps. One night is viable only when the arrival and next-morning exit are simple.
Night 5: Sighișoara to Sibiu
This is another relocation day. A fortified church such as Biertan is optional only after verifying:
- official opening on that date;
- exact ticket or accepted entry method;
- route and parking;
- religious-service or event restrictions;
- enough margin before Sibiu check-in.
Otherwise, drive directly. Sibiu’s official tourism portal can support a flexible old-town walk after parking. Do not attach a second timed museum to the drive.
Use three Sibiu nights so the mountain-road decision can move or be abandoned without changing hotels.
Night 6: Transfăgărășan decision day
The Transfăgărășan, DN7C, is not guaranteed by month. A seasonal reopening announcement does not prove every desired section remains open on the visit day. Use INFOTRAFIC and the responsible road authority’s current notice to identify the exact open section.
Run five gates the evening before and again before departure:
- Road: the intended DN7C segment is officially open in both directions.
- Weather: Romania’s national meteorological warnings and local mountain forecast fit the drive.
- Vehicle: rental contract, tyres, fuel/charge and brakes fit the legal paved route.
- Driver: rested, confident and not pressured to complete the route.
- Return: daylight, planned turnaround and a clear Sibiu return remain protected.
If any gate fails, do not start. If conditions deteriorate during the drive, turn around at a safe legal point or follow authority instructions. Reaching Bâlea Lake or crossing the full road is not a completion requirement.
Sibiu fallback
Use a confirmed local product with no mountain-road dependency. The ASTRA Museum is one possible anchor when its live ticket, hours, outdoor conditions and access suit the group. Alternatively, use one operating Sibiu museum or a flexible city walk.
The fallback must be valuable enough that the trip succeeds without DN7C. Do not hold a non-refundable mountain accommodation that forces an unsafe decision.
Night 7: local day and departure preparation
Protect the final Sibiu day from a long westward detour. Use one local attraction, refuel or charge the vehicle, check damage and return instructions, and prepare the next day’s departure.
Corvin Castle near Hunedoara is not inserted here. Add it only with at least one extra overnight and its own official ticket, parking, route and return plan. Otherwise it creates a fragile drive before rental return or onward transport.

Do not convert to USD inside the itinerary or compare a non-refundable economy car with a flexible larger vehicle. Record kilometres included, additional driver, border terms and the actual excess.
Daily driving protocol
Before moving
- Check INFOTRAFIC, weather warnings and the exact route.
- Walk around the vehicle and review fuel/charge.
- Confirm parking and attraction status.
- Download offline route information without assuming mobile coverage.
During the drive
- Follow signed limits and police instructions.
- Stop only in legal safe places.
- Do not handle a phone while driving.
- Take a real rest when attention declines.
- Never drive after alcohol or impairing medication.
At each base
- Use the confirmed parking rather than entering a pedestrian zone.
- Photograph the parked location and any new vehicle damage.
- Move the next day’s ticket only if its terms allow.
- Recheck the next anchor before the cancellation deadline.
Accessibility and non-driving alternatives
Castle stairs, citadel cobbles, outdoor museums and mountain stops impose different demands. Contact each venue about the exact visitor route, lifts, toilets, seating and companion support. Test parking-to-entry distance, not just the attraction entrance.
If driving is unsuitable, choose fewer bases connected by dated rail and buy exact local transfers or guided products. Do not reproduce the same seven-night structure with taxis unless each leg and cost has been verified.
Final route rule
Use Brașov for three nights, Sighișoara for one and Sibiu for three. Protect Bran and Peleș as separate optional products, keep relocation days light and make the Transfăgărășan fully conditional. Add Corvin Castle only with more nights.

The trip is complete even if a castle closes or DN7C never passes the gate. A resilient route is defined by safe decisions and usable bases, not by checking every name from the old itinerary.
